ARTSFEST AXED The Stirrer can reveal that Birmingham's Artsfest - billed as Britain's biggest free arts festival - is being axed. It will be replaced by a new event called Brumfest whichaims to have more local appeal. Check out more here in The Stirrer's weekly column for the Birmingham Mail. This week we also discover that the NEC doesn't serve fair-trade tea and coffee, even though Birmingham has just celebrated it's first anniversary as a fair trade city. Curious goings on at Birmingham Council House yesterday, where the city's Equalities Unit was brokering a meeting between Asian community leaders and Andrew Brown -father of Meshack Tesfa Bernard Brown who was shot dead recently in Lozells. One official denied that any meeting was due to take place, another told a BBC reporter who'd got wind of the gathering to “piss off.” There was eventually a get-together, and Andrew Brown told The Stirrer last night he felt the discussions had been positive, although he wouldn't elaborate on what action might result. Brown has maintained all along that he doesn't want vengeance for his son's death. A LIDL BIT OF COMMON SENSE The company which runs car parks for the supermarket chain Lidl have climbed down in a row over a £50 “fine” levied on Stirrer writer Lynn Hawthorne. She out-stayed her welcome at the Lidl in West Bromwich, after being taken ill on a visit to the nearby Job Centre. Total Parking Solutions of Borehamwood who obtained Lynn's details from the DVLA warned the fee would rise to £70 if it wasn't paid promptly, and that debt collectors could be sent in. Having heard Lynn's story, which was highlighted here, they've now withdrawn the charge and apologised. At last, a Lidl bit of commonsense. Just what the West Midlands needs - another giant supermarket. Residents in Shirley are fighting back against plans for a new Asda which will see precious parkland gobbled up, and couldthreatenthe local traders who havealready survived the onslaught of more than half a dozen large stores. Here's their story. >>> more A TASTE OF SPAGHETTIPete Millington is a one-man writing factory. Not content withregularoutput for The Stirrer, he's found time to pull together the latest edition of his excellent magazine Spaghetti Gazetti, dedicated to local life and culture. It's seriously good. |
