WEAPONS OF MASS DISTRACTION 23-12-2008 The sale of Britain’s remaining stake in its nuclear bomb making factory at Aldermaston has been sneaked out reports Barbara Panvel. There has been no announcement from the government about the sale of its one-third stake in the UK Atomic Weapons Establishment, which makes and maintains the warheads for Britain’s nuclear missiles, to Jacobs - a US engineering company. BNFL put up a short statement on its website Thursday afternoon confirming the sale. The Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform made no official comment. Gerald Howarth, shadow defence minister, said that the decision not to announce the sale to parliament is “unacceptable”. Nick Harvey, Liberal Democrat defence spokesman, said: “The government appears to be guilty of concealing all this from parliament and the public. There has been a huge degree of suspicion over what has been going on at Aldermaston, particularly over recruitment and how this fits with our obligations under the non-proliferation treaty".
