An amazing walk-through sculpture came to Birmingham over the weekend as part of the ArtsFest weekend.
The curious piece known as Levity II, whilst looking from the outside like a very extravagant bouncy castle against the backdrop of Millennium Point and the old Curzon Street railway station contained, on the inside, a beautiful dream-like environment of bright, vivid colours and soft new age music where visitors could literally chill-out in another dimension.
Sadly Levity II was only in place for two days, which is a shame as this fantastic sensory experience needed to be experienced by more of us. When I came across it by accident one Friday lunchtime, it was virtually empty apart from the occasional and therefore surreal sight of lone, shoeless office workers and local authority security officers meditating in bright pools of translucent light.
The sculpture is known as a luminarium - a place you walk into to be immersed in radiant light and colour. Designed by Architects of Air, based in Nottingham, Levity II is created purely by daylight shining through coloured plastic and features winding passages, pods, paths, natural geometry, with a strong influence from Islamic art.
Well worth the visit - this was a real sensory feast - if my back garden was big enough I’d definitely get one. (see here)
