1. Calories, the Victoria, John Bright St, Birmingham. Friday, 8pm.There’s a bit of REM when they were good, some Smiths and a lot of classy pop in the work of this young Birmingham band who released their debut album Adventuring last year and have a 7” out next week. For two quid you can’t really go wrong.www.myspace.com/caloriesband

2. Twin Lizzy, the Roadhouse, Lifford Lane, Kings Norton. Tribute bands might not exactly be fashionable but sometimes it’s good to hear something you know already. You’ll never guess whose music they play.

3. Jo Caulfield Won’t Shut Up, Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton. Saturday. 7.30pm. One of the funniest and most successful female comedians in the country, Jo Caulfield’s current show goes a long way to explaining why she’s so popular. Tickets £14, www.wolvescivic.co.uk

4. The Low Anthem, O2 Academy, Birmingham. Sunday, 8pm. An American folk rock trio who toured the festival circuit to great acclaim last year, picking up an Uncut awards nomination into the bargain. Support is from highly-acclaimed singer/songwriter David Ford. Tickets £11, www.02academybirmingham.co.uk

5. Jesca Hoop, Glee Club, Hurst St Birmingham. Sunday, 8pm. An unfortunate fixture clash for the Californian folk singer who’s toured with Elbow and Mark Knopfler, as well as nannying for Tom Waits.Tickets £6, www.glee.co.uk
