FANS BOYCOTT CALL AS COLLY KICKS OFF CAMPAIGN

03-07-2008

Stan Collymore

Stan Collymore is calling for a fans boycott of Premier League matches to force soccer bosses to cut prices. The former Villa and Wolves striker wants £20 tickets to be made available for every game - and warns a walkout might be the only way to achieve it.

Collymore kicked off the idea this week during his nightly Talksport phone-in with Danny Kelly. The pair plan to hire a "battlebus" to travel around the country promoting the idea.

"I think football supporters for quite some time now have been getting ripped off" Collymore said.

He points out that the cheapest season ticket at Bayern Munich costs just £100 even though they employ the highest-paid player in Europe, Luca Toni, who is believed to earn £120,000 a week - making a mockery of claims that English sides can't sign top players unless fans pay through the nose.

And he says that if the game's authorities don't listen, a one-off day of protest when fans stay away might be the best way to make them listen.

Collymore used to watch Villa from the terraces and argues that working class supporters have been priced out of the game.
