"KILLER" ASBESTOS TILES CLOSE SPARKHILL POOL 05-07-2008
The Stirrer can reveal that Birmingham’s Sparkhill Baths was closed yesterday because of fears that loose asbestos ceiling tiles could fall, killing swimmers and staff. It will stay shut indefinitely. According to a bland council press release, the pool shut because of “maintenance issues”. Our sources suggest that it was rather more serious than that. Overnight on Thursday, the tiles became dislodged above both pools and managers reported that they posed a deadly risk to anyone in the vicinity. While Bimingham continues to ponder the folly of an Olympic size pool, the news highlights the woeful state of maintenance in many of its older, established swimming baths.
